DEXA Scan

Understand your bones, muscle and fat, not just your weight, so you can protect your strength for the long run.

Weight and BMI only tell part of the story. Our DEXA scan looks underneath the surface, measuring bone density, muscle mass and visceral fat, so you get an early read on fracture risk, metabolic health and overall strength, long before problems would show up on the scales.

Scales can’t distinguish fat from muscle or bone.

DEXA shows you exactly what your weight is made up of, so you know your true fracture and metabolic risk, and whether your training and nutrition are actually working.

What it is a DEXA Scan?

A low-dose X-ray scan that measures your bone density, body fat percentage, lean muscle mass and visceral (internal) fat.

It will give a full regional breakdown showing how fat, muscle and bone are distributed across your body.

It is the gold-standard baseline for picking up early signs of osteopenia or osteoporosis, and for tracking changes in your body composition over time.

Bone and muscle loss happen quietly, often for decades before you’d notice. DEXA can flag low bone density or declining muscle mass 10–30 years before a fracture or frailty sets in, giving you a real window to build strength while it’s easiest to do so.

How it works

Testing

A 10–15 minute scan at one of our partner radiology clinics (allow about 30 minutes total). You simply lie on a table while a scanning arm passes over you, no needles, no injections, barely any prep needed

Interpretation

A Peak Health doctor reviews your bone density, fracture risk, muscle mass, body fat % and visceral fat alongside the rest of your Peak Health data

Turnaround

Results are typically ready within 1–2 weeks of your scan. You’ll get a personalised report covering bone health strategies and when to book your next scan

Why do it through Peak Health?

This isn’t a basic body-composition scan, we also assess bone density and visceral fat, two of the biggest drivers of fracture risk and long-term metabolic health.
Your results are read alongside your bloodwork, genetics, lifestyle and goals, so nothing is interpreted in isolation.
A Peak Health doctor walks you through what actually matters for you and turns your results into a clear plan, whether you’re focused on bone protection, fat loss, strength, performance or ageing well

What’s included

  • Full-body scan covering bone density, body fat %, lean mass and visceral fat
  • Regional breakdown of how fat, muscle and bone are distributed
  • Doctor review of your fracture risk, metabolic risk and body composition trends
  • A personalised walkthrough explaining your results in plain terms
  • Guidance on next steps and when to rescan

Who this is for

Anyone who wants to track fat loss, muscle gain or body recomposition more precisely than scales or BMI allow

People with metabolic risk factors, central weight gain, pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, who want clarity on visceral fat and muscle status

Older adults, peri/post-menopausal women, or anyone concerned about bone density or muscle loss who wants an early, actionable picture

DEXA scans use a very small dose of radiation. This is considered safe in low quantities, but for safety we recommend no more than 4 scans per year, spaced at least 3 months apart.
